With all the rain we've had lately, who'd have thought the weather and golf course
would have been perfect for the year's first tournament! John Abate played a strong
round to post a net 67 and win the New Years Cup at Coyote Creek. The Tournament
Course played tough as it usually does, but there were several notables during the
round. Gary Lawson scored an eagle on the par 5 fourth hole with a monstrous tee
shot and a terrific second shot landing close to the pin, converting for the eagle.
Bob Dela Cruz had a 45 footer for birdie on the par 5 seventeenth hole which never
left the line, finding the bottom of the cup. And just when it looked like a 10 foot
birdie putt was safe for longest putt on the 18th, Paul Bove sank a 42 footer from
across the green to steal it away. Will Hoppner shot a round of 84 to take low gross
and Loree McQueen won the Ladies' Long Drive. Reico Cruz tried to steal the rest of
the show by taking the Men's Long Drive and two Closest-to-the-Pins. He let Justin
Collins and Scott Hunter win the others. Fewest Putts resulted in a tie between Loree
McQueen and John Abate at 31, with John winning the tie-breaker.
What a great start to the new year and what a great day of golf. Congratulations everyone and Happy New Year.
